Loon on the Lake Posted June 24, 2013

Off

Monika, our guest from Massachusetts, took this great photo of  loons on the lake.  If you look closely you can see a second one in the upper left corner.  This seems to be a good year.  We’ve had reports of at least two active nests this year.  We are all keeping watch for any babies.   Momma turtle at work

This is also snapping turtle nesting season.  The moms will come up on the lawn, preferably after it rains and  the ground is soft.  They stay about an hour and deposit around 30 ping-pong ball sized eggs in a nest they dig with their back foot.  Once they are done, they cover the hole and slowly return to the lake.   Babies will generally emerge in late September.
